Mission

In accordance with the Association of Canadian Archivists Guidelines for Student Chapters, the mission of the ACA@UBC is to:

a. Serve as a means of introducing new archivists into the profession;
b. Enhance the educational function by providing an additional focus for the students to discuss archival issues, identify with the profession, and engage in professional activities;
c. Promote communication among student members and between students;
d. Provide a communication channel for its members with the general membership of the Association and to the Board on matters of concern to the Chapter;
e. Develop the leaders of tomorrow’s archival profession; and
f. Attract new members into the Association.

2016-2017 Executive

Co-coordinator: Michelle Spelay

Michelle is a third year Dual MAS/MLIS student from Comox, BC and holds an English degree from the University of Victoria. Her interests include drinking tea, reading books and petting dogs.

Co-coordinator: Andrea Tarnawsky

Andrea is a second-year Dual MAS/MLIS student from Edmonton, AB. She completed her Bachelor of Music in Music History from the University of Alberta and plays clarinet. Her interests include university and corporate archives, post-bop jazz, and funky patterned pants.

Secretary: Rebecca Willmott

Rebecca is in her second year of the MAS program and is originally from Victoria, BC. She has a BA in History (Hons.) from the University of Victoria. Her interests include government records management, doughnuts, and nail polish.

Treasurer: Becky Taylor

Becky is a second year MAS/MLIS student from Port Alberni, BC. She holds a BA in Canadian History from Vancouver Island University. She is interested in personal and heritage archives, but if cake archives are a thing, you need to tell her about it right away.

Graphic Designer: Anna Henrichsen

Anna is in her final term of the MAS program and hails from Lincoln, Nebraska. Her interests include cats, embroidery, and community archives.

Webmaster/Wordpress Coordinator: Mia Steinberg

Mia is in the second year of the MAS program, and previously completed a BA in Psychology and Film Studies from the University of Victoria. Her interests include obscure indie music, quirky science fiction, and cats. She has knitted one sweater per semester while at SLAIS; the current one is dark blue.

Events Co-coordinator: Kristina McGuirk

In her second year of the Dual MAS/MLIS program, Kristina has a communications background including journalism and English degrees from Drake University. Her interests include James Bond, food tours, audiobooks, and university archives and repositories.

Events Co-coordinator: Mark Penney

Mark Penney is in the second year of his Dual MAS/MLIS degree and originates from Tsawwassen, British Columbia. He likes bicycle riding and reading ancient history.

Events Co-coordinator: Alexandra Neijens
Alex is in her first year of the Dual MAS/MLIS program. Though she is originally from Brussels, Belgium, she has been living in Vancouver since 2001. She has a BA in History from Queen’s with a minor in French and Spanish. Her interests include sailing, crocheting, and drinking tea.

ARMA Co-representative: Jennette Chalcraft

Jennette is in the second year of the Dual MLIS/MAS program. Originally from a small village in England, she has resided in the Lower Mainland since 2001. When not contemplating archival, library and information matters, she enjoys cooking, baking, reading mystery novels, and befriending any dog in the vicinity.

ARMA Co-representative: Samuel Mickelson
Samuel completed a BA in History at McGill University and is a Dual MAS/MLIS student in his third semester. His interests include government and community archives, information policy, and special libraries. He also enjoys writing, cooking, yoga, and contemplating big ideas.

Publicity Co-coordinator: Marie Shockley

Marie is a third year Dual MAS/MLIS student from Rathdrum, Idaho.  She previously completed a BA in both History and Music Theory/Composition.  She enjoys hiking, watching bad movies, and anything to do with music.

Publicity Co-coordinator: Andrea Shaffer

Andrea is a first year MAS Student from New York, USA.  She earned her BA in History from the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC where she wrote an undergraduate thesis on the preservation of memory through state mandated education.

AABC Representative: Marisa Parker
Marisa is in the final term of the MAS program and is from Shawnigan Lake, BC. She previously completed a BA in Art History, also from UBC. Her interests include personal & community archives, genealogy, and baking sourdough bread.

Past Coordinator: Jennifer Vanderfluit
Jennifer is about to finish the Dual MAS/MLIS program. Her hobbies are collecting pens and sticky notes in her personal life, and lamenting pens and sticky notes in her professional life.
